The lagoon of Nora

The lagoon is quite a surprise since it is not just an exceptional naturalistic centre. The archaeological surprises here, for lovers of the genre, certainly not lacking.

Separated from the sea thanks to the FradisMinoris peninsula, an ancient geological formation better known as Panchina Tirreniana, the lagoon is a riot of islets that find their maximum concentration a few steps from the mouth of the Rio Arrieras stream.

Quite interesting for a visit is the FradisMinoris peninsula, heavily inhabited in Punic and Roman times. The construction material of the city of Nora was extracted from this area and human interventions are still quite visible today. Although the entire peninsula is today covered with dense vegetation, it is possible to admire a beautiful open-air Roman cistern and ancient square blocks that still remain where they were worked.

Focus on tradition and nature

The lagoon is home to many coastal bird species, first of all the Corsican gull which has one of its most prolific Italian nesting sites here. Also not to be forgotten are the fish species present in the lagoon that are still fished today with the use of traditional boats and tools.

Useful information

It is possible to visit the lagoon from October to March by reservation. All on www.lagunadinora.it
